The first time we heard about Yangshuo’s floating markets, we pictured something out of a dream: vendors gliding on bamboo rafts, the scent of sizzling street food mingling with the misty morning air, and the stunning karst mountains standing as silent, majestic guardians. As travel bloggers and a couple always chasing authentic experiences, we knew we had to see it for ourselves. What we discovered was more than just a market—it was a living, breathing tapestry of culture, romance, and adventure.

Yangshuo, nestled in Guangxi Province, is already famous for its surreal landscape. But the floating markets, particularly the one at Yulong River, offer a unique glimpse into a way of life that has persisted for centuries. This isn’t just a place to shop; it’s a place to connect—with the locals, with nature, and with each other.

Why Yangshuo’s Floating Markets Are Perfect for Couples

For couples, Yangshuo’s floating markets are a hidden gem. Unlike the crowded, noisy markets in big cities, this experience is intimate, slow-paced, and deeply immersive. It’s a chance to step away from the hustle and reconnect while sharing something truly special.

A Symphony for the Senses

From the moment you arrive, your senses come alive. The sound of water gently lapping against the bamboo rafts, the melodic calls of vendors offering their goods, the vibrant colors of fresh produce and handmade crafts—it’s a symphony that invites you to be fully present. For us, holding hands while navigating the narrow waterways, sharing a fresh-baked sweet potato, or sipping on freshly squeezed sugar cane juice became moments we’ll never forget.

Photography Heaven

If you’re a couple that loves to document your travels, this is your playground. The soft morning light filtering through the mist, the reflections of the karst peaks in the water, and the candid shots of local life create a photographer’s paradise. We must have taken a hundred photos before 9 a.m.! Pro tip: Bring a polarizing filter to reduce glare on the water and capture the vivid colors of the market.

Navigating the Market: A Practical Guide for Two

When to Go

The best time to experience the floating market is early in the morning, ideally between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m. This is when the market is most active, and the temperatures are pleasant. We arrived at 6:30 a.m. and watched as the vendors set up their rafts—a magical sight in itself. Avoid weekends if possible, as domestic tourists can crowd the area.

Getting There

Most floating markets are located along the Yulong River, about a 20-minute drive from Yangshuo town. We hired a scooter for the day (a romantic and fun option for couples) for about 50 RMB. Taxis and tuk-tuks are also available, but negotiate the price beforehand. Some guesthouses offer shuttle services—check with your accommodation.

What to Expect

The market is a floating labyrinth of bamboo rafts. Vendors sell everything from fresh fruit like lychee and longan to local snacks such as youcha (oil tea) and zongzi (sticky rice dumplings). You’ll also find handmade souvenirs like bamboo baskets and embroidered textiles. Be prepared to bargain gently—it’s part of the culture, but always do it with a smile.

Must-Try Experiences for Couples

Share a Bamboo Raft Ride

This is non-negotiable! Hiring your own bamboo raft is the ultimate way to explore the market. For around 150 RMB per person, you can float through the market, stopping whenever something catches your eye. Our raft driver even let me try poling the raft—a hilarious and humbling experience that had us both laughing uncontrollably.

Taste the Local Flavors

Food is the heart of this market. We highly recommend trying: - Guilin米粉 (Guilin mǐfěn): A tangy, spicy rice noodle dish that’s bursting with flavor. - 啤酒鱼 (píjiǔ yú): Yangshuo’s famous beer fish, cooked with local herbs and a rich sauce. - 糍粑 (cíbā): Sweet glutinous rice cakes, perfect for sharing. Wash it down with some freshly squeezed orange juice or a cup of hot youcha.

Take a Cooking Class Together

Several local operators offer cooking classes right near the market. We learned to make 啤酒鱼 (píjiǔ yú) from scratch—from selecting the fish from a floating vendor to mastering the wok. It was messy, fun, and incredibly rewarding. Now we can recreate a taste of Yangshuo back home!

Beyond the Market: Romantic Activities in Yangshuo

The floating market is just the beginning. Yangshuo is packed with activities that are perfect for couples.

Cycling Through the Countryside

Rent a tandem bike or two singles and explore the flat, scenic paths along the Yulong River. You’ll pass through quaint villages, rice paddies, and ancient bridges. We stopped for a picnic with goodies from the market—a perfect afternoon.

Sunset at Xianggong Hill

For an unforgettable romantic moment, hike up Xianggong Hill before sunset. The panoramic view of the Li River winding through the karst mountains is arguably the best in Yangshuo. We brought a blanket and some local snacks and watched the sky turn shades of orange and pink.

Catch the Impression Sanjie Liu Show

Directed by Zhang Yimou, this outdoor spectacular uses the natural landscape as its stage. Hundreds of performers showcase local culture and folklore under the stars. It’s touristy but utterly mesmerizing—a great way to end a day.

Staying in Yangshuo: Accommodation with Character

Yangshuo offers everything from hostels to luxury resorts. For couples, we recommend: - Boutique Guesthouses: Places like Yangshuo Mountain Retreat offer private balconies with stunning river views. - Eco-Lodges: For a more sustainable stay, try a lodge nestled in the countryside. - Traditional Heyuan: Some restored ancient homes offer a glimpse into the past with modern comforts.

We stayed in a small guesthouse run by a local family. Their hospitality made us feel like part of the community, and their recommendations led us to hidden spots we’d never have found otherwise.

Tips for a Smooth and Romantic Trip

  • Cash is King: Most vendors don’t accept credit cards. Bring small bills for easier transactions.
  • Dress Comfortably: Wear light, breathable clothing and comfortable shoes. A hat and sunscreen are must-haves.
  • Learn a Few Phrases: While many vendors understand basic English, knowing a few words like 谢谢 (xièxie - thank you) and 多少钱 (duōshǎo qián - how much) goes a long way.
  • Stay Hydrated: The humidity can be intense. Carry a reusable water bottle.

Yangshuo’s floating markets are more than a destination; they’re an experience that lingers in your heart long after you’ve left. For us, it was a reminder of why we travel together—to discover, to connect, and to create memories that become the foundation of our story. Whether you’re adventurers, foodies, or romantics at heart, this is one journey you won’t want to miss.
