The karst landscapes of Guangxi are legendary, and few routes showcase their beauty better than the bus ride from Yangshuo to Xingping. This short but breathtaking journey takes you through some of China’s most iconic scenery, where limestone peaks rise like dragons’ teeth from emerald-green rice paddies and the Li River winds lazily through the valleys.
While private cars and taxis offer convenience, the local bus provides an authentic, budget-friendly way to experience the countryside. The route is well-traveled, making it easy for tourists to navigate, and the slow pace allows for uninterrupted views of the landscape.
As the bus pulls out of Yangshuo, the town’s famous peaks—Moon Hill, Big Banyan Tree, and the Ten-Mile Gallery—fade into the distance. The real magic, however, lies in the unnamed formations that dot the countryside, their jagged silhouettes cutting into the sky.
Small villages cling to the riverbanks, where fishermen still use cormorants to catch fish—a tradition dating back centuries. Farmers tend to their rice terraces, and water buffalo lounge in shallow ponds. The bus windows frame these scenes like moving postcards.
Xingping is where the landscape reaches its cinematic peak. The town itself is quaint, but the real draw is the view immortalized on the 20 RMB note. As the bus nears Xingping, the river bends dramatically, and the karst formations take on a mythical quality, especially in the golden light of sunrise or sunset.
Xingping is a paradise for hikers and photographers. The Laozhai Mountain Trail offers panoramic views of the Li River, while the Nine Horses Fresco Hill challenges visitors to spot all nine hidden horses in the rock face.
For a closer look at the river, bamboo rafting is a must. Local boatmen pole their narrow rafts downstream, passing under the shadow of towering peaks. It’s a serene contrast to the bus ride’s rolling views.
Xingping’s old town is a maze of cobbled lanes and Ming-era architecture. Tea houses, artisan shops, and small museums offer glimpses into the region’s history. Don’t miss the chance to try Guilin rice noodles from a street vendor—spicy, sour, and utterly addictive.
The bus from Yangshuo to Xingping isn’t just transportation—it’s an essential part of the adventure. Every turn reveals another masterpiece of nature, proving that sometimes, the journey truly is the destination.
